How Our Classes Work
We offer two types of classes. Both help you learn new skills and make things — they just serve slightly different purposes.
Skill-Building Classes and Workshops
What they’re for:
Skill-building classes focus on learning techniques, building specific projects, and exploring materials — whether you’re trying something new or leveling up.
What you’ll get:
What you’ll get:
-
Guided instruction
-
Creative projects
-
Time to experiment and build
Good to know:
Some skill-building classes assume you’ve already taken a clearance class for that tool. If that’s the case, we’ll say so clearly in the class description.
Clearance Classes
What they’re for:
Clearance Classes teach you how to safely and confidently use specific tools or workshop areas.
What you’ll get:
-
Hands-on tool training
-
Safety best practices
-
Approval to use that tool during open workshop hours
Good to know:
Some tools require a beginner class before independent use. This helps keep everyone safe and supported in a shared space.
What Tools Require A Workshop Clearances?
To use certain tools independently during open workshop time, you’ll need to take a clearance class first. This currently includes:
- CNC Router
- CNC Embroidery Machine
- Woodworking Hand Power Tools (i.e. circular saw, router, air nailer, reciprocating saw, and jig saw)
- Large Woodworking Tools
- Trotec Laser Cutter
- Laser Rotary Accessory (Prerequisite: Trotec Laser Cutter Clearance)
- Pottery Studio
- Jewelry Station
- xTools Laser Cutter
Already have extensive experience with a tool?
In some cases, staff may be able to review your background and offer an alternative pathway to bypass the clearance class. Reduced fees may apply. Email [email protected] to learn how to proceed!
